No Child Left Behind has failed America. How do we change that?

Imagine making a difference in the American school system. Imagine helping educators and students move past President Bush's failed No Child Left Behind act. Imagine moving America in line with the top school system of the world.

It IS possible, and Tony Wagner is going to tell you how!

The Global Achievement Gap is a dream come true for those interested in seeing the American school system advance into the 21st century.

You can read a review of the book by visiting the In the Classroom topic at The Parent Station.

You can also read more by Tony Wagner, author of The Global Achievement Gap: Why Even Our Best Schools Don't Teach The New Survival Skills Our Kids Need -- And What We Can Do About It, at the following link:

Big Changes This Week!

Towle Creations made some big changes this week!

First, we closed WAHJunction. I moved all the content from that site to WAHStation, so the information is still there, but it is coupled with information that draws the same traffic. Basically, this consolidation makes it easier for me to manage my work load.

Secondly, and sadly enough, I decided to close Mommy Loves Freebies. It became a lot bigger than I had anticipated and managing the information was just a beast! Since the birth of my twins I've been pulled in every which way, and managing my websites has had to happen in smaller windows of time.

To help make up for the loss of our "freebie" site, we've partnered with great sponsors to bring you quarterly contests on this blog. If you look to the right, you will see an entry form for entering a contest to win a set of 10 personalized note cards from Little Junebug Graphics. You can enter to win every single day, and if you sign up for our TC Village Newsletter Blog Update email mailing list, I will include the option for our subscribers to earn additional entries into the drawing.

I don't anticipate making any additional changes to our websites. What we have will remain, as they have proven to be the most valuable in our family of sites.

So, enter to win today, and be sure to sign up for the email mailing list, too. Your info will never be sold or shared, and that's a promise!

Did you recently give birth?

The Parent Station has a new topic: Life Postpartum. Life isn't easy after you've given birth. Whether it be the first time or the 5th time, so much happens during the months following the birth of your child. For nine months we (baby included) are the center of attention. People constantly ask us how we are doing, how we feel, how we are sleeping, and so much more. Then, before we know it, we are put on the back burner by ourselves and our friends and family because once the baby arrives THEY are the center of the universe for the time being. So what happens to us as mothers? We got questions galore, and Life Postpartum helps you find some of the answers!

In our featured article, Jennifer Wider, M.D.'s book The New Mom's Survival Guide: How to Reclaim Your Body, Your Health, Your Sanity, and Your Sex Life After Having a Baby, is reviewed by yours truly. We've also got a couple of other articles linked from the topic regarding your postpartum happiness and clearing up any confusion you may have on postpartum depression.

So, your kids are in school...

Whether you have young kids or teenagers, we've got a few topics that are not only informative, but very helpful to parents and teachers.

I recently reviewed a book, An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers: Shaking Hands with Aliens, by Bruce Gevirtzman. You can read the review in the Parenting Teenagers topic at The Parent Station. The book itself if an easy read - the author is comical as well as informative in his writings around teens - and how we as adults can learn to understand them.

Gevirtzman also wrote an excellent piece about Parents and their role in education. You can read his article Parents and Failure at the Back to School topic at The Parent Station.

Gevirtzman is an amazing resource that you as a parent should tap. An Intimate Understanding of America's Teenagers is a MUST HAVE for all parents. Even though I don't parent any teens myself, my day IS coming and reading up on this in advance is more than helpful in the phases I am dealing with right now... as I can only set things up to go better for my teens when they reach that age.

Attention Vegans - We've got more for you!

New Topic at The Parent Station - Behavioral Issues

While in search of some answers for our own issues at home, I came across an article I thought might help some of you that have children who might be having a hard time keeping their behavior in check. Since my son started Kindergarten, he's spread his wings and although he is a little more independent, his behavior reflects this new-found state of being and his behavior has changed, too. So if you may need help in understanding some of your own children's issues, check our Behavioral Issues at The Parent Station's Pregnancy, Birth and Parenting Channel.

Some of you may also want to read more about discipline, because even when we have to put them back in line, we can do it in a loving way that encourages good behavior.

New Topic at The Parent Station - Toy Safety

A great way to introduce you to our newest topic at The Parent Station, Toy Safety, is to start off by featuring an excerpt from the book The Coming China Wars, where author Peter Navarro reminds us of just how serious so many of the recent toys recalls really are.

Youth Sports at the Pregnancy, Birth & Parenting Channel

I've just added a new topic to The Parent Station's Pregnancy, Birth & Parenting Channel:
Youth Sports.

Diversity in Youth Sports
"Researchers estimate that over 14 million children play one type of organized sport and several of those youngsters play multiple sports depending on the season. Sports are important for teaching good sportsmanship, goal-setting, teamwork, and for encouraging children to have an active lifestyle. Aside from these obvious advantages, organized sports can also play a much larger and culturally significant role as well." Read more...

Frugal Living at the Women's Interest Channel

We've got a newly added Featured Article at the Women's Interest Channel at The Parent Station:

Frugal Living Tip - Giving Yourself a Reason to Save Money:

"In the US and much of the Western world, we equate money with happiness, even though our personal experience seldom gives us reason to believe that the old saying "you can't buy happiness" is anything less than true. We assure ourselves that if we only get a raise or get a better job or win the lottery, all of the stress of daily life will disappear and we'll have time for those things in life we really enjoy."
